LA Sweat Dev Camp: Empowering Belizean Cycling

The LA Sweat Dev team embarked on a transformative journey in the heart of Belize City amidst the vibrant culture and lush landscapes. Our mission? Not only to prepare for the season ahead and take the start line for the biggest race in Belize - the Women’s Cross Country Classic - but also to immerse ourselves in the beauty and warmth of Belizean hospitality and culture. After a week of cycling, touring, and racing in Belize, the teams presence left an indelible mark on Belizean cycling and its community.

From the moment the team arrived on Belizean soil, we embraced the spirit of adventure. Exploring the rich history of Belize, we ventured to ancient Mayan archaeological sites, rode ATVs to cascading waterfalls hidden within the jungle, and island-hopped on idyllic islands dotting the Caribbean Sea. Each excursion not only fostered team bonding but also offered a deeper appreciation for the diverse landscapes and cultures of Belize.

However, the impact extended far beyond our exploration of Belize’s natural wonders. Engaging with local youth, we organized a community group ride that promoted physical activity and fostered mentorship and camaraderie. These interactions culminated in heartfelt conversations, where experiences were shared, and dreams were kindled. The cycling community in Belize was receptive and the group ride was well attended.

Central to the team’s influence on Belizean cycling was the presence of Kaya Cattouse, the National Champion, whose journey from local roads to international stages has inspired a generation of young local cyclists. As part of LA Sweat, Kaya became more than just a rider; she became a beacon of hope and possibility for aspiring athletes across Belize.

As we lined up for the Women’s Cross Country Classic, the culmination of our time in Belize, we did so with a newfound sense of purpose and unity. In a triumphant display of skill and teamwork, we emerged victorious in the race. At the forefront of the pack was Regina Doty, whose exceptional performance propelled her across the finish line, clinching the victory for LA Sweat. Her triumph exemplified the team’s dedication and hard work.

Beyond the finish line awaited more than just victory; there stood a testament to the enduring impact of sport in empowering communities and inspiring change. Our victory extended far beyond the podium. It was a testament to the collective effort and support that fueled our success, from the support crew to the local sponsors who made our journey possible.

Their contributions not only facilitated the logistics of the camp but also underscored the collaborative spirit that defines Belizean cycling. As we celebrated our victory, LA Sweat reflected on the profound impact of our time in Belize. As we continue our journey forward, we will carry with us the lessons learned and the bonds forged in the heart of Belize.
